The Indian culture is often considered by us, poor Westerners, to be “exotic”. I must confess I never liked that word and, after living in India and being in this position to fill the “exotic element” gap in the eyes of most of the people who passed by me daily, I like it even less. To put a person, and even more an entire culture, in this box, is to define by exclusion, to limit, to silence diversities; especially when you’re the foreigner in a day-by-day context of a local society. Therefore, the daily life of a country, of a people – especially the Indian people, which carries a multiplicity of origins, customs and languages in it - can never be “exotic”.

In this sense, the photographic work of Sunayana Deka contributes in a rich and irreplaceable way to the “de-exotification” of India, when seen by a western eye. A traveler, the artist addresses in her street portraits a culture that is daily, that is commonplace, that speaks of the “Indian people” as each individual, with their personal history and their particular perception over it.

The exhibition ‘Street Portraits’ was curated by the artist herself, who uses simple post-production techniques, giving her almost raw perception in each image a space to speak. Yana, as she likes to be called, is a lady of few words, and tells a world of stories through her photographic gaze.
